Troubleshooting & FAQs

A form will not save

Validation messages, missing required fields, and what to do when saving genuinely fails.

On this page

What it is

A form that will not submit is usually telling you something. The message is beside the field it applies to, which may be above the fold you are looking at.

When to use it

When Save appears to do nothing.

Who can use it

Anyone.

Where to find it

  • Anywhere in the product with a form

Step by step

  1. Scroll up. The first invalid field is usually higher than where the button is.

  2. Look for red text beside a field, and for a general message at the top of the form.

  3. Fill in every required field. They are marked.

  4. Check date fields — an end date before a start date is refused.

  5. Copy anything you have written somewhere safe before reloading, then reload and try once more.

  6. If it still fails, contact support and say what you were saving and what the message said.

What you should end up with

The form saves, or you can tell us exactly what it refused.

If something goes wrong

There is no message at all.
Reload the page and try again — you may have been signed out in another tab, in which case the save is rejected silently.
A date box will not accept what I type.
Use the date picker rather than typing. Date fields expect a specific format.
I lost what I had written.
Copy long text into a note before hitting save on anything lengthy. It is a habit worth having on any website.
